START SAILING COURSE The Start Sailing Course is operated using the syllabus of Irish Sailing Association (ISA). Starting at the very beginning and assuming that all participants have no previous dinghy sailing experience but are happy to give dinghy sailing a go and explore the thrills of sailing your boat in sheltered waters. You will quickly build a solid skills base. The Start Sailing Course syllabus includes: • Learning how to Rig your sailing dinghy • Weather - what conditions are safe for me? • What clothing is the right clothing to wear? • Learning how to determine the direction the wind is coming from. • Pre-launch safety checks. • Turning the boat around. • Setting the sails according to what angle you’re sailing at to the wind. • Capsize recovery. • Ropework – knots. What to expect from the Start Sailing Course This course will provide you with an excellent basic knowledge of the sport of sailing – by the end of your sailing course with us you will know the basics well and you will know if you are ready to move on to the next skill level whether that be by way of additional sailing courses or crewing/sailing your own dinghy or a combination of both. The Boat If you take the Start Sailing Course at Skerries, we use a combination of boats from the small Topaz dinghy – which is a versatile and virtually indestructible dinghy with either one or two sails, to the Topper Omega – a large 2-3 man dinghy with up to three sails and trapeze (for those adventurous enough to give it a go! All our boats are easy to handle and have the ability to downsize the sail area (reef) where necessary. Gear We will supply lifejacket and waterproof jackets and can provide wetsuit in most sizes. You will need swimwear, old tracksuit bottoms or light pants, old pair of trainers, towel. Duration and Cost. The Start Sailing Course is usually run over a couple of evenings and 1 day at the weekend. We normally start on a Thursday evening, continue on Friday evening and finish with a full day Saturday. The 2-day Start Sailing Course will only cost you €130 if you are a member of Skerries Sailing Club or, €150 if you are not a member. IMPROVERS SAILING COURSE The Improvers Sailing Course is the best way to quickly improve on those sailing skills you picked up on our Start Sailing Course and aims to improve your boat handling techniques and expand on the range of weather & wind in which you will feel comfortable on your dinghy. As a one day intensive sailing course you can expect to achieve a high standard within a very short time due to our low pupil/teacher ratio – we concentrate on each persons individual abilities and requirements. The course syllabus includes – • Imroving those tacking & Gybing manouvers. • Reefing the sails afloat • Picking up moorings • Stopping the boat & coming alongside • More capsize drills! • Ropework The Boat At Skerries we use a combination of boats from the small Topaz dinghy – which is a versatile and virtually indestructible dinghy with either one or two sails, to the Topper Omega – a large 2-3 man dinghy with up to three sails and trapeze (for those adventurous enough to give it a go! This 1-day Improvers Sailing Course will only cost you €75 if you are a member of Skerries Sailing Club or, €120 if you are not a member.
