START SAILING COURSE

The Start Sailing Course is operated using the syllabus of Irish Sailing Association (ISA). Starting at the very beginning and assuming that all participants have no previous dinghy sailing experience but are happy to give dinghy sailing a go and explore the thrills of sailing your boat in sheltered waters. You will quickly build a solid skills base. The Start Sailing Course syllabus includes:

• Learning how to Rig your sailing dinghy
• Weather – what conditions are safe for me?
• What clothing is the right clothing to wear?
• Learning how to determine the direction the wind is coming from.
• Pre-launch safety checks.
• Turning the boat around.
• Setting the sails according to what angle you’re sailing at to the wind.
• Capsize recovery.
• Ropework – knots.

What to expect from the Start Sailing Course
This course will provide you with an excellent basic knowledge of the sport of sailing – by the end of your sailing course with us you will know the basics well and you will know if you are ready to move on to the next skill level whether that be by way of additional sailing courses or crewing/sailing your own dinghy or a combination of both.

The Boat
If you take the Start Sailing Course at Skerries, we use a combination of boats from the small Topaz dinghy – which is a versatile and virtually indestructible dinghy with either one or two sails, to the Topper Omega – a large 2-3 man dinghy with up to three sails and trapeze (for those adventurous enough to give it a go! All our boats are easy to handle and have the ability to downsize the sail area (reef) where necessary.

Gear
We will supply lifejacket and waterproof jackets and can provide wetsuit in most sizes. You will need swimwear, old tracksuit bottoms or light pants, old pair of trainers, towel.

Duration and Cost.
The Start Sailing Course is usually run over a couple of evenings and 1 day at the weekend. We normally start on a Thursday evening, continue on Friday evening and finish with a full day Saturday.

The 2-day Start Sailing Course will only cost you €130 if you are a member of Skerries Sailing Club or, €150 if you are not a member. Should you choose to join Skerries Sailing Club following your course (click here for details), then we will refund you the difference.
