SSC All Inclusive Sailing Initiative
Over the past several years, Skerries Sailing Club (SSC) has proudly partnered with local organisations, including the Skerries Autism Group (SAFT), to create unforgettable sailing experiences for children with intellectual and physical special needs. By organising week-long summer camps and midweek sailing sessions, we've introduced these incredible kids to the joys of sailing. Their enthusiasm and sheer delight on the water have been truly inspiring.
SSC is committed to fostering inclusivity, aiming to integrate these young sailors into our regular club activities as we expand our offerings. The uniqueness of these opportunities sets us apart, making our camps highly sought after across North County Dublin.
The success of our summer camps propelled us to acquire two second-hand Hansa dinghies and secure partial funding for other sailboat and safety boats. These boats are specially designed for children with special needs. The Hansa dinghies, suitable for one or two sailors, feature a self-righting design and a heavy keel to prevent capsizing. To enhance safety and comfort, we've invested in new seats and a keel lifter.
In 2023, with the help of grant aid funding, we added a Hawk 20 to our fleet. This larger sailboat can accommodate up to six sailors and is exceptionally stable, with a high boom to prevent head injuries and other features tailored for special needs groups. Continuing our mission, in 2024 we are also investing in a specially designed hoist and a new engine for our support boat to ensure we can facilitate as many inclusive sailors as possible.
Skerries Sailing Club is dedicated to making sailing accessible and enjoyable for all, providing these children with a sense of freedom and adventure on the water. We look forward to welcoming even more junior sailors to our inclusive sailing community.
